Up-cycled Unicorn Key Chain
My daughter started Kindergarten this year. We were so excited for her. We made sure she had all her school supplies, including a cute lunch bag. To add an extra special touch, I wanted to make a key chain to hang on her lunch bag. Not only would it personalize her bag, but also make it stand out so she would not get it confused with another bag. She had so many trinkets and necklaces, I was sure that we could up-cycle what she already had to create a cute unicorn key chain perfect for school. I hope this project inspires you to create and up-cycle!
Up-cycled Unicorn Key Chain Supplies:
- Old key chains
- Old necklace with unicorn charm
- Jump rings
- Vinyl decal
- Round nose pliers
How I made the Up-cycled Unicorn Key Chain
Step 1
First, I created a custom Initial decal using my Cricut cutting machine. If you have never heard of a Cricut machine, it is basically a machine that cuts materials including vinyl, a variety of papers, and depending on the model, wood and metal. I like to use my Cricut machine for cutting mainly vinyl decals and t-shirt iron-ons. If you would like more information about Cricut you can go to their website.
Step 2
After applying the decal to the key chain, I took a part the old unicorn necklace and removed the charm. I placed the charm aside for using later.
Step 3
In the next step, I removed the jump ring from another old key chain. As well as, removed the rest of the chain, including the key ring.
Step 4
For the next step, I put together the unicorn charm, jump ring and chain with key ring. I used jewelry pliers to open and close the jump ring.
After the 4th step was completed, I had two up-cycled key chains. At this point, I could have just connected the key rings together and called it a day, but I wanted to make them look like once key chain, instead of two.
Step 5
Lastly, I simply removed the key ring from the charm chain, by sliding the chain off of the key ring. Next, I connected the charm chain to the star key ring. This was also done by sliding the chain onto the star key ring.
The Up-cycled Unicorn Key Chain turned out great in my opinion. I encourage all of you to try to use your resources around the house before opting to go out and by materials for a project. It is great for your pocket book and for the environment. Also, it can be loads of fun up-cycling old items into new ones.
