Get Kids to Try a New Healthy Food with a Kids Bell Pepper Tasting
Anyone have picky eaters in their family? I do. It can be hard to get my kids to eat healthy. But there is hope! One fun and easy way to get my kids excited about a healthy food is to introduce or reintroduce using a game or activity. Like a Kids Bell Pepper Tasting! I love doing tastings. My children love opinion activities, where they can voice how they feel about something and tastings are perfect for that. I mean who can resist the excitement of trying something new when presented the right way. So…
Lets get kids to try new healthy foods!
The Kids Bell Pepper Tasting
The tasting of choice, was a kids bell pepper tasting, because I love bell peppers and, many times, these gems are mistaken for being hot. However, bell peppers have a slightly sweet taste and are packed with vitamins. I was excited to see what my children would think.
What You Will Need:
- red bell pepper
- yellow bell pepper
- orange bell pepper
- green bell pepper (4th bell pepper is optional)
- Bell Pepper Tasting Worksheet
- Crayons or colored pencils
Like any tasting, you will need a selection of what you are going to be sampling. I chose to use red, yellow and orange baby bell peppers, but you could also add in green, remove a color, or do full size bell peppers.
Prep Work
Next, I prepared the bell peppers by washing, cutting in half and removing the seeds. For a nice presentation, I cut them into pieces and placed then all on a plate grouped by color. Lastly, for observation, I cut some of the peppers in half and left as is so the kids could see the insides. Again, it is all about presentation. Grouping the bell pepper colors together makes them more aesthetically pleasing and having some cut in half provides the element of discovery.
The Kids Bell Pepper Tasting Worksheet
To go along with the tasting, I created a fun tasting worksheet. This was so that the kids could take note of the color, description, and the best part, decide if they liked this new healthy food or not. Each child was given a plate for tasting, a worksheet, and colored pencils for coloring in the bell pepper images on the worksheet. Next, we tasted one color at a time, and filled in the Kids Bell Pepper Tasting worksheet as we went through each bell pepper. At the end of the worksheet, they had to decide which color bell pepper was their favorite.
The Results of the Kids Bell Pepper Tasting
In the end, only one out of three kids liked the bell peppers, but all the kids still had a great time discovering a new healthy food. Now they know what bell peppers taste like, for better or for worse. I really encourage all of you to try this healthy food tasting activity with your children, or any food tasting. Remember, a tasting can be a fun and easy activity that will bring you and your family together, as well as, gets kids thinking.
